About Parenting for Change
Welcome to Parenting for Change! I'm Debra Jacobs, owner and director of Children of the World preschool (www.childrenoftheworldpreschool.com) and mom to two teenaged daughters.
Like many of my friends and family members, I plunged into a state of shock, fear, and despair after the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Sexism, racism, misogyny, and lies prevailed, and we faced the implementation of hate-based policies, environmental destruction, and the free reign of corporate greed.
In the days and weeks following the election, several parents of children attending my preschool asked me, “What can we do? How can we set the groundwork now, with our four and five year olds, for a lifetime of leaning towards justice? How do we launch them as agents of change, or at least people who speak truth to power, without scaring them about the realities we now face?”
I thought long and hard about those questions. At first, the only answer I had was, "Talk to them. Relay your values." As time went on, though, I realized that there's so much more we can do, not only with preschoolers but with children of any age. I started writing down some of those ideas, and Parenting for Change was born.
Even if you don't have time to join a political campaign or volunteer for a progressive non-profit, you can make a huge difference by raising your children to stand up for justice and equality.
Check out the Parenting for Change blog, where every Tuesday and Friday I post some quick, easy-to-implement activities for busy parents (and teachers!) to do with their preschoolers.
Thanks for joining me on this journey! Get in touch - I'd love to hear what you're doing to prepare your kids to create a better future.
Even before my own kids came along, and before I opened my preschool, I read books and academic studies about child and adolescent development - for fun! In addition to running the preschool, I offer parent coaching services, and have presented at many education-related conferences. I hold an Ed.M. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
